The Gneisenau was a very sucessful battleship of the Kriegsmarine in World War 2. Toghether with her nearly identikal sistership Scharnhorst she took a lot of missions. One of them get the most far away hit on an enemy ship in battle conditions. A realy famous mission wasin 1942 "Unternehmen Cerberus", where Gneisenau, Scharnhorst and Prinz Eugen drive back to germany throug the English Channel. A short after this mission Gneisenau get a hit from a plane bomb in dock in Kiel. The magazin exploded and destroyed al lot of the ship. After that, she should be repaired, but that was never finished.
At least she was sunk as blok ship and later scrapped.
